SATURNS

"An almost mechanical catchiness belies a deeper meaning in their works, a kind of delicious candied center hidden inside a chocolate bar you think you’re familiar with."

MDNGHTSTRT // Movember Edition // 2012

When I was first conscripted to write about SATURNS for the Movember Initiative, I told my editor to go to hell.  In his dingy office, staring at him from across his desk, I argued that planet-based music is best left to the musings of glam-rock wizards and Gustav Holst.  In response he threw a half-empty bottle of whiskey at my head and based on that eloquent counter-argument, I began listening to this mysterious ‘Saturns’ and their debut EP, Screaming Cats.
Having known nothing about SATURNS prior to this moment, I quickly did some research.  I learned that this group was little more than two people, Toronto cousins Lukas Cheung and Bryan Sutherland.  Like most great pornographies, this two-man operation was formed over a spontaneous weekend in July after the creation of the EP Screaming Cats, and they have been popping up on blogs and podcasts all over the world.  Both Cheung and Sutherland were jacked to lend their support to the yearly initiative to make people grow facial hair on their upper lips.
Musically, one would say they’re an electronic pop-duo at first listen.  An almost mechanical catchiness belies a deeper meaning in their works, a kind of delicious candied center hidden inside a chocolate bar you think you’re familiar with.  I confess that I was prepared to brave another act of violence from my editor when I first threw on their track, DIAMONDE, until I read the lyrics.  I realized then that this was not simply pop, not simply electronic.  No, what I was listening to was a deceptive and carefully crafted story about a lunatic shouting at his lover through the walls of her diamond fortress, told in a way that rewards the listener who gives a damn about what they hear.

Even now, their work continues.  They’ve performed many Toronto music nights, including the Wavelength music series, 2 way monologues, and Silent Shout parties, and the duo have their eyes set on touring when their full length LP is complete in 2013.

One of the biggest obstacles men tackle in regards to general wellbeing, is a reluctance to discuss the health issues they face with their partner, family, mates or doctor. Movember was born from recognition that a fun and engaging initiative could help encourage men to become more actively involved in their own health.

Movember aims to increase awareness and support for men's heath by getting conversations started at a grassroots level, educating men about the health risks they face and raising vital funds for support programs.
